The story of Yoora (age 5) (age 5)
We met Yoora for an online consultation. This energetic happy girl suffered from diarrhea after every meal since she was one year old. She was small for her age, with pale skin and swollen glands. Also, she had frequent colds and infections, tummy pain, bloating and gas, stunted growth, hyperactivity and ADHD symptom.
Our functional medicine assessments identified multiple triggers including antibiotic use as a baby and Epstein-Barr Virus. Laboratory tests showed multiple dysfunctions including bacterial pathogens, gut dysbiosis, leaky gut, poor immune function, intestinal inflammation and food sensitivities. Yoora started in the programme, the Kids 3 Month Root Cause Starter Kit.
Timeline
Initial functional medicine consultation
Lab testing and start of Protocol 1
Monthly consultation to review progress and adapt protocol
Significant improvement in symptoms:
- Complete termination of diarrhea
- Stool is normal, whole and substantial
- Improved intestinal function
- More balanced energy throughout the day
The tests we did — and what we found
- Laboratory tests: mucosal barrier assessment, GI map, food sensitivities
- Clinical findings/dysfunctions identified:
- Metavolic wellness panel: high 8 OHdG
- Mucosal barrier assessment: high zonulin, high histamine and high histamine:DAO-ratio
- GI map pathogens: helicobacter pylori. Very low commensal bacteria, SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)
- GI map parasites: high SIGA, high anti-gliadin and borderline eosinophil activation protein
- Food sensitivities: non-coeliac gluten sensitivity and dairy
Our therapeutic interventions
- Diet: remove gluten, high histamine foods and sugar. Work with school to ensure her diet is strictly gluten-free and dairy-free. Remove all tropical fruits, artificial colours and MSG. Ensure a balance of protein, carbs and healthy fats in each meal.
- Parent support: to remove sugar, starch and gluten 100%, avoiding cross contamination to support immune system and heal mucosal barrier. Provide gluten-free/dairy-free diet info for school and grandparents. Support parents in the transition to gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free and supplement use at home.
- Rest: keep to strict sleep daily routine and minimise screen time.
- Toxins: remove all toxins from Yoora’s environment.
- Supplementation: liposomal immune support, DAO, probiotics, blend of l-glutamine, aloe vera, n-acetyl d-glucosamine and liquorice.
- Natural pathogen eradication: limosilactobacillus reuteri DSM 17648.
What Yoora’s parents reported
- Within three weeks the diarrhea stopped, stool became normal
- Increase in confidence and self-esteem for bathroom use
- More stable energy
- Easier for Yoora to go straight to sleep at night
- No more frequent colds or infections since starting the programm
- She can now go on camping holidays and she has more freedom and confidence to enjoy infant activities
Personal approach and full support
Yoora’s case demonstrates the importance of a multifaceted approach in treating intestinal dysfunction and a compromised immune system in a young infant. Addressing SIBO and bacterial pathogens, inflammation, leaky gut, nutritional deficiencies, immune function and detoxification proved to be highly effective. Also supporting the child’s family, friends and teachers to make this transition was crucial in implementing a 3600 treatment protocol. The functional medicine model’s personalised approach enabled tailored interventions that addressed the root cause of Yoora’s symptoms.
Looking forward
A comprehensive treatment protocol over three months lead to significant improvement and eradication of most symptoms. We predict: if family and school adhere to the programme, after six to twelve months on the programme there will be improvement in Yoora’s ADHD symptoms as well.
Every case is unique, and there is no standard health protocol for treating symptoms. Consult one of our functional medicine practitioners before implementing any dietary or lifestyle changes or starting any supplementation.
The story of Ian (age 55) (age 55)
Once we had introduced ourselves in the online meeting, we got to learn more about Ian’s history. Pale-looking and with dark circles under his eyes, this business executive told that he worked in a high-stress environment. He slept poorly and had been suffering for a long time from burn out, chronic fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, cold extremities, poor sleep, digestive and intestinal issues.
Our functional medicine assessments identified multiple triggers including a Lyme infection and chronic stress. Laboratory tests showed multiple dysfunctions including low hormones, intestinal parasites and bacteria, gut dysbiosis, poor immune function, intestinal inflammation, nutritional deficiencies and food sensitivities.
Timeline
Initial functional medicine consultation
Lab testing and start of Protocol 1
Monthly consultation to review progress and adapt protocol
Functional medicine retesting
New Protocol 2
Significant improvement in symptoms:
- Improved intestinal function
- Cold extremities less prevalent
- Better concentration
- Deeper sleep
- Better joint function
- Improved immune function
- No dark circles under eyes
- Better skin tone
- Increased energy
The tests we did — and what we found
- Laboratory tests: stress and hormone panel, metabolic wellness panel, mucosal barrier assessment, GI map, food sensitivities, metabolic typing test
- Clinical findings/dysfunctions identified:
- Hormones: exhaustive phase for cortisol sum, low estrogen, low progesterone, low testosterone and low DHEA
- Metabolic wellness panel: high 8 OHdG
- Mucosal barrier assessment: high zonulin (FM range), high histamine
- GI map pathogens: high enterohemorrhagic E. coli, high helicobacter pylori, SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)
- GI map parasites: high dientamoeba fragilis, low elastase, low SIGA, borderline calprotectin
- Food sensitivities: egg white and non-coeliac gluten sensitivity
- Metabolic type: slow oxidiser dominant
Our therapeutic interventions (Protocol 1 for three months)
- Diet: follow metabolic typing diet for genetic type, remove gluten, high histamine foods and sugar, increase low purine-rich proteins.
- Rest: improve sleep hygiene and plan relaxation time.
- Exercise: reduce exercise intensity to daily walking until body heals, no intense or prolonged cardio.
- Supplementation: adrenal support, magnesium glycinate, liposomal vitamin C, NAC, DAO, digestive enzymes, probiotics and a blend of milk thistle, l-methionine and l-taurine.
- Hormonal support: bio-identical DHEA, bio-identical progesterone and a blend of ashwagandha, astragalus, maca root and turmeric root.
- Natural pathogen eradication: anti-microbials and binders.
What Ian reported (after 3 months)
- Immediate reduction of IBS symptoms
- Increase in energy
- Less brain fog
- Better concentration
- More motivation
Clinical retests (after 3 months)
Not satisfied yet, together we decided on doing additional laboratory tests: stress and hormone panel, mucosal barrier assessment and GI mapping.
Results (after 3 months)
- Hormones: increase in hormonal levels and cortisol sum
- Mucosal barrier integrity: reduced histamine levels and histamine:DAO ratio
- GI map: successfully eradicated all pathogens (enterohemorrhagic E. coli and high helicobacter pylori) and parasites (high dientamoeba fragilis), reduced SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), increased digestive enzyme levels and reduced calprotectin
- Immune system: improved immune function (but still low) and mucosal barrier damage still present
Next therapeutic interventions (Protocol 2: course correction for 3 months)
- Diet: support client to remove sugar, starch and gluten 100%, avoiding cross contamination to support immune system and heal mucosal barrier, increase foods like apples, broccoli to support liver detoxification.
- Exercise: increase exercise by including three gym sessions per week focusing on strength and endurance to build muscle.
- Supplementation: adjust bio-identical hormone dosage, add in calcium D glucurate to support detoxification, increase liposomal vitamin C and add in a liver flush protocol.
Multifaceted treatment in metabolic dysfunction
Ian’s case demonstrates the importance of a multifaceted approach in treating metabolic dysfunction and severe degeneration caused by Lyme disease. Addressing gut health, hormones, nutritional deficiencies, immune function, detoxification and stress management proved to be highly effective. Thanks to the functional medicine model’s personalised approach we were able to customise interventions to address the root cause of his symptoms.
Ian’s situation
Ian enjoys a marked improvement in all health systems and a significant improvement in symptoms. His intestinal function is better and cold extremities are less prevalent. He can concentrate better, has improved joint function and enjoys deeper sleep. His immune function improved, he has better skin tone and increased energy. And good to see: the dark circles under his eyes have disappeared.
